From such an unlikely situation, Jesus chose one of the foundations of the Church, a man others, judging from his job, thought was not holy enough for the position. But he was honest enough to admit that he was one of the sinners Jesus came to call. He was open enough to recognize truth when he saw him. "And he got up and followed him" (Matthew 9:9b).

Visit of Fr. Claudio Weber

On 11th of this month Fr. Claudio Weber was here in our community with Fr. Martin. And as I had mentioned to you early the day of installation to the minor ministries. And so it was a wonderful experience to the whole of community. And in the following day he visited our new house construction site and then he came to our college campus. And I think that he must have been happy to see our college. And he had a little time shared with the dean of Theology faculty and then back to home. And in the evening here was a quite long conference to the community regarding the present situation of the congregation from different parts of the world. And it was indeed good to hear from him. And he was speaking about each place and presence of our congregation. And it was good. And in the next day morning that is today (13_09-2006) he left our community to Namburu and he will be there for some days and will leave to Philippines. And we the community of the Priests of the Sacred Heart would like to thank you for your kind visit to us and we hope that you will present about us in Rome and will have a good for our future. Once again thank you and God bless you

THE MOMENTS OF SMALL SMALL HAPPIESS AND.... DREAMS INTO REALITY OF LIFE.......

The installation of brothers to Ministries of Acolyte and Lector.

Though 9/11 is not considered as a good day, it was an important day for the community as well as for the District of India. Because on this day six of the third year Theology students were installed to the ministry of the Acolyte and lector. And Fr. Claudio Weber (Assistant General Superior) was the main celebrant of the Eucharist in which the ministries were given. It was also important day for the community because first time after the Golden Jubilee celebrations Fr. Martin is with us. And so it was also an occasion to celebrate his golden jubilee with the local community. And so it was altogether a happy moment. And in the sermon father emphasized on the importance of the ‘service” rather than being “served”. And it was also emphasized more about the proclamation of the Kerigma and the importance of the Eucharist in our life. Especially for Dehonians, and he did not forget to speak about the comparison between the Eucharist in our life and in the explanation of Fr. Dehon. And it was inspiring, in spite of his little English. And also Bro. Thomas Vinod Chittliappilly expressed his free will to be accepted to get ordination of Deaconate. And soon his permission will be granted, we hope so. And at the end of the Eucharist bro. Thomas gave a small gift to Fr. Martin in the name of the community. And it was a wonderful gift indeed. And though the celebrations were only for the community members and there was none from outside, it was short and sweet and wonderful. And there was a special meal after the celebration of the Eucharist. And all are happy. And we as a community pray for the brothers who are installed to the minor ministry that the Lord will bless them and their intentions and hopes and dreams.

50 years of religious life of the P. Martin Van Ooy

50 years of religious life of the P. Martin Van Ooy -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- P. Cláudio sends these notes of India

I arrived at the India Sunday, day 3, on of the hour initiating the celebration of the 50 years of religious life of the Superior of the District, P. Martin van Ooy. The celebration occurred in the minor seminary, in Kumbalanghi, Cochin, Kerala. In this seminary they are 22 seminaristas, 11 that intermediate school and others frequentam 11 that they had after entered the conclusion of the secondary studies. These study English to be able to initiate the philosophy in the next year and make a first experience of contact with the congregation, with its espiritualidade and mission. P. Martin is Dutch, made its first religious profession in day 8 of September, and has 50 years. It worked per many years in Indonesia and has 12 is in India. It is the first present dehoniano in this country. Today, day 8, celebrated the Jubilee with much simplicity in Aluva, where it is the philosophy seminary, with 25 students at the moment. Seven will initiate the postulancy one soon. The community wakes up very early. Today, one day normal of lessons, the jubilee Mass was celebrated to the 5.30. In the coffee of the morning (colazione), a simple cake to commemorate. The seminaristas had that to leave fast for the Institute the Carmelites where others study philosophy together with 9 congregations. To the 8,30 the Advice of the District congregated itself, until the hour of the lunch. A little of the reality stows gift to know more, of the concerns, necessities and perspectives of future of this dehoniana community, that still it needs new missionaries to help to develop its mission. E the verb to develop here is appropriate. It is a District in Franc and fast growth. After 12 years of presence it has 36 religious Indians, 5 of perpetual votes, 4 of them priests, and 31 of temporary votes, 26 studying theology. They are being formed in the perspective missionary. Now, and for some few years, need very new missionaries, especially religious that they can dedicate the formation to it of the young.
Saudaçoes.

ONAM.... THE CULTURAL CELEBRATION IN KERALA

MAVELI: THIS IS THE LEGENDERY KING.

As you know, India is a land of verities. It has many states, which had different languages, majority of religions, different feasts, celebrations, different way of dressing, different kinds of foods and so on. Everyone who comes to India says that they have never seen such land anywhere in the world. It a very naked reality. If you go from one state to another have a look in give a wonder in a person. One of the many special about India is the variety of celebrations. Now such a celebration is going on in Kerala (the most south state in India). And that is Onam. And I would like to tell you what is Onam and so read the following passages and enjoy. And when it is a possibility for you then come to India and enjoy it more in a real way. Ok hope to see you soon.

POOKALAM: IS THE SPECIAL WAY FOR WELCOMING THE LEGEND KING.
ONAM (ഓണം)

Onam (ഓണം), a harvest festival, is celebrated in Kerala, a state in India. It generally falls in the months of August-September. Onam is a celebration to mark the annual return of the spirit of the mythical King Mahabali to his kingdom, and a commemoration of his benevolent rule and his sacrifice. The festivities are intended to assure the King that his people are happy and to wish him well.
One mention of Kerala and the memory of ‘Onam’ festival springs to mind in many Indians. Kerala, the South Indian coastal state regards Onam as a very important festival. This festival often falls around the month of September. If you ever visit Kerala around this festive period you can expect to be absorbed by the joyful festive mood which would go on for about ten days as the Onam festival’s celebrations last for a period of ten days.

Legend
Legend has that Onam is celebrated after the memory of King Mahabali. It was said that the King ruled Kerala long time ago and that he was a good King who looked after his people well. Thus Onam symbolizes the joyful rule of the King and the happiness that the people had under his rule. The people also have the belief that during Onam, the King returns to Kerala to visit his people.

Celebrations

The people in Kerala who celebrate Onam prepare for the festival by cleaning their houses and decorating them. On Onam, everybody in the family would be wearing new clothes. Delicious sweetmeats and favorite vegetarian dishes would be cooked and served on banana leaves. One important item that would be visible outside each house is the ‘pookalam’ a flower mat. This flower mat is like a symbol of welcoming the King Mahabali. During Onam, traditional rituals are performed and the people celebrate the occasion with a grand feast. One favorite dessert that would be served on the day is ‘payasam’ a sweet & tempting porridge.

During the celebrations of Onam, if you’re a tourist in Kerala, you can never miss the colorful parade of elephants & fireworks. For entertainment, the popular Indian dance, ‘Kathakali’ dance would be performed and other spectacular events like carnivals and sports events would be some of the highlights for the festival as well. At night there would also be songs and dances to delight all. In fact, it has been noted that a high number of tourists would always visit kerala around this period just to catch all the action and joyous celebrations of Onam.

Another attractive feature to watch out for during the festival Onam is the famous ‘Vallamkali’ or otherwise known as the great boat race. For this boat race hundreds of men row the boats to the beat of drums and cymbals. An interesting thing to note is that above each boat there is a scarlet silk umbrella and gold coins are hung from the umbrellas. There are various boats, which also include the ‘Chundans’: the snake-like long boats that are shaped like snakes. This event is a very popular with many as various types of boats compete with each other to win the race. Many usually crowd around to catch the boat race and some cheer for their favorites to win.
One remarkable thing about Onam is that it is celebrated by all, not only Hindus but also by Christians and Muslims who are living in Kerala. It is one festival that unites all people regardless of race and religion.

LET US PRAY WITH THE FATHER.....

During the month of September, Benedict XVI will pray especially for responsible use of the means of social communication.
Specifically, the Pope's general intention for September is: "That those who use the means of social communication may always do so consciously and responsibly".
The Pope's missionary prayer intention for the month is: "For the People of God in mission lands: may they realize their right and duty to keep up-to-date with developments in the faith and the Church."
